Students Given Dynamic Role in Kingsborough Sustainability Efforts

I recently spoke to some faculty members at CUNY-Kingsborough Community College (KCC), and was given brief news on Sustainability and Students. As I try to keep up, the more progress I am witnessing with the R2C proposal. For those that are unfamiliar, R2C: Responsibility To Care is a student initiative to give students an active role in how KCC Goes Green.

While the focus of the KCC Sustainability Task Force (administration) is to plan the best strategies possible in reducing Kingsborough’s Carbon Footprint, R2C will serve as a platfrorm for students to dynamically engage in compiling data and strategies to help shape the path of KCC’s greening efforts. It aims to achieve that through:
- raising awareness
- promoting environmentally sustainable practices within the school
- creating favorable learning and teaching conditions
- generating community goodwill
- educating the next generations on the value of caring for the environment
- collaboration between faculty, staff AND students on sustainability projects

Apart from the environmental impact and awareness goal, R2C will create opportunities and possible Leadership training for students interested in green careers, something that may impress recruiters. It also aims to bring in sustainability leaders and influential people to connect and reach out to the on-campus community.

It seems like a great idea, but will require enormous effort. I hope to see it come to fruition!

What do you believe is the best approach for a school to Go Green?
